The Maldives has launched its first direct Umrah flight from Addu Gan International Airport to Saudi Arabia, marking the first time pilgrims from the southern atolls have been able to travel directly for the pilgrimage.
The inaugural flight was operated by the national airline, Maldivian, using its Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft. The service was organised in collaboration with travel agency The Traveller as part of efforts to improve access to Umrah travel for residents of Addu City and the southern atolls.
A total of 260 pilgrims, including children, travelled on the inaugural flight. Maldivian also presented commemorative gifts to the passengers before departure.
The launch forms part of the Government's broader efforts to make Umrah and Hajj travel more accessible for Maldivians through new services and travel arrangements.
According to Maldivian, the direct service is expected to improve convenience for pilgrims from the southern region and similar flights are planned in the future.
Maldivian launched its first direct Umrah flights from the Maldives to Saudi Arabia on 22 July last year, when more than 750 pilgrims travelled on the inaugural service. The airline also operated direct Hajj flights for Maldivian pilgrims during last year's Hajj season using its Airbus A330 aircraft.
The number of Maldivians undertaking Umrah has increased in recent years, with growing participation from younger pilgrims and families travelling with children.
The airline has also expanded regional air connectivity through its Southern Connectivity Network, which operates scheduled services between Addu, Fuvahmulah and the three regions of Huvadhoo Atoll to improve domestic travel across the southern atolls.
